heres a little less than jake history
History lesson 101:
What does the name mean?
My parents had an 80 pound english bulldog. He had his own private space on the couch, my parents would get take out food just to feed him, and he was treated like a king. His name was "JAKE". So, everything in my house was less...than...JAKE. Also, "jake" is an old twenties term for "average, smooth, .."
Who's who? What and when?
LTJ's been "officially" together since January 1993, but me and Chris released two demos as LTJ in 1992 with Shaun, x-roadie, on bass. Shaun left to go to New York, I moved to Gainesville, we had a different bass player for a month or two, then got Roger. Months after, we got Jessica on sax then Buddy on trombone. Jessica moved away and didn't get up to G-ville much so we got Derron to play baritone sax. After Jessica left the band entirely, we got Lars from Skankin' Pickle, who filled in on one tour. Pete from Slapstick came down after that and joined up to play trombone.
So the line up now is:
Chris-guitar,vox
Roger-bass,vox
Vinnie-drums,lyrics
Buddy-trombone
Derron-baritone sax
Pete-trombone
How many releases does LTJ have?
At present we have 76 Less Than Jake releases. If you count all the compilations we've been on, it's over 130. Even to a collector nerd like myself that's a lot.
What's the deal with Pez?
Me and Roger both collect them. Yeah, it creeps into some songs but mostly doesn't get into actual songs anymore. Yes, we both have pez influenced tattoo's. To simplify it, pez dispenses sugar, and is collectible. The only thing that would make it better is if it dispensed nicotine or caffeine.
Mike Sinkovich, Doug Hastings, Jen, Johnny Quest?
People always ask about one of the above. Everyone of these people is an actual person, with all true stories behind the songs. "Mike" is an old friend that ran away from the suburbs in New Jersey to who knows where. The song questions the why in a fictious conversation. "Doug" is someone that at a really crazy time in my life was always around and always a magnet for insanity. "Jen" was a girl that liked Chris, but seemed to never knock, would eat my ramen and drink my Kool-Aid, and eerily enough had some sort of "fling" with her cousin. After being super nice to her she wound up hating Chris. I think it's because I make really crappy Kool-Aid...Who knows? "Johnny Quest" was a nickname for a kid that said "we ruined Gainesville punk rock" by playing ska and having horns. That song still is one of my all time faves.
Is Al's War a true story?
Yep, every single word of it.
Is "Cheese" a real person?
Yes again...He is one of my oldest friends and lives in Pittsburgh.
Why all ages shows?
This is an odd question, why wouldn't it be? It seems the all ages shows have so much more energy.
Where's the Losing Streak hidden track?
It's at -1:41 on the CD. If you hit play then rewind it will usually get you there. By the way, this contest is over, so don't send it in anymore, or I'll have to get Roger to kiss you without brushing his teeth first.
Can I tape your show?
Yes. Here's the deal...some clubs have there own policies about taping and can be real dumbasses about you bringing your stuff in, so make sure you don't get caught bringing it in because at that point they'll probally keep it for the show or forever. You can record audio, but NEVER from the soundboard! You can use your video camera or regular camera..no problem. Please send us copies of EVERYTHING you record, it would be cool as hell of you. My main problem in all this is people selling bootlegs for outrageous prices. Please don't sell them. Only trade and don't support the sellers by buying crappy sounding third generation dub copies for 15 bucks.
Where or how can I interview the band?
Either e-mail us or find us during the show to set up an after show interview. One of us will always do it. Just go to the merch booth to set one up and bring a copy of your zine for us.
